2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Review: How the Hot Hatch Icon Stays Relevant After 45 Years
The Iconic Hot Hatch Returns: Inside the Latest Golf GTI
As an ardent fan who’s owned three GTIs over the last 15 years, few new car launches get me as excited as a new generation of the iconic hot hatch. The Mk8 2022 model ushers the GTI into a high-tech new era while retaining that raw, analogue driving feel intrinsic to its DNA.
A Brief History of an Icon
Ever since the first Mk1 GTI introduced the concept of an attainable, performance-oriented “hot hatch” to the masses in 1976, driving enthusiasts have had a new affordable toy. My first was a handed-down Mk2 from the late 80s, complete with plaid cloth seats cramping four friends during high school cruises along winding backroads (sorry Mom!). But as I upgraded over the next decade from a Mk4 to Mk6, power, tech and refinement increased without losing that playful spirit.
Mk8 Brings Big Upgrades Under a Familiar Shape
You’d be forgiven for not immediately noticing the Mk8 as all-new – the rounded silhouette and C-pillar “kink” are trademark GTI. But under the skin lies the biggest overhaul yet, sitting on VW’s latest MQB platform packing upgraded systems. Options like matrix LED headlights, a digital cockpit and driver assistance systems bring the GTI clearly into the 2020s. Yet a multi-function perforated leather wheel and trademark plaid seats keep that classic identity. More Power with Serious efficiency GTI fans care most about what’s under the hood, and the Mk8’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine adds 13 hp for a total 241 hp and 273 lb-ft torque - hugely usable grunt. My DSG test car hit 60mph in under 6 seconds thanks to that immediate shove, while delivering 34 mpg highway. And the optional performance exhaust pops and crackles just enough to satisfy when revved, without annoying the neighbors constantly. Balanced, Playful Handling Remains Core Strength Through sweeping curves of my favorite SoCal canyon routes, the GTI stayed planted and lively. The new VAQ limited-slip differential meant I could really lean on the accurate steering and impressive grip levels from wider tires before gentle understeer curbed my momentum. Adaptive dampers on certain trims add greater compliance in comfort mode too. It’s still the trusty Front-wheel drive balance that makes the GTI so satisfying to chuck around bends. Gearbox Options to Suit Any Driver Stick-shift fans can rejoice as VW retained the standard 6-speed manual for ultimate involvement, with auto rev-matching helping smooth shifts. But most will opt for the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic that suits the GTI’s torque-rich character - snappy, smart shifts to better accelerate but still highly responsive using paddles. I’d welcome the manual’s added driver connection, but won’t mourn losing the DSG’s convenience in traffic.
How Rivals Compare
Having tested the latest Civic Type R and Hyundai i30 N Performance, the Mk8 GTI keeps pace with these FWD heavies while undercutting entry prices. The Honda and Hyundai build on front-drive with their less-sophisticated platforms by adding power or handling sharpness – turning up extremes where the GTI takes a more holistic approach. All three deliver huge grins, but the GTI remains that all-weather, all-condition dynamo.
Why it Matters
As electric swells, SUVs dominate and autonomous looms, few cars engage a driver’s senses like the 2022 GTI. It's an icon that helped define the hot hatch formula of blending real-world practicality with responsive handling, communicative feedback and usable performance. The Mk8 carries that torch, with a maturity that should woo enthusiasts for another generation. Few cars so consistently deliver driving joys with such an infectious spirit as the GTI for the money. Would you swap to an electric car if they were £6,000 cheaper?
Would you swap to an electric car if they were £6,000 cheaper? Boris Johnson considers slashing the price of zero-emission vehicles for drivers who ditch their petrol of diesel motors Motorists could soon be given £6,000 by the government if they agree to scrap their existing petrol or diesel car and buy a new electric vehicle, according to reports. The plans, which could be announced as early as July, would be part of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plans to relaunch the economy - following in the footsteps of a similar proposal set out in Germany's €130bn coronavirus recovery plan. It could mean that the price of the British-build Nissan Leaf electric vehicle falls from £26,845 to just £20,845 and would see a new VW ID.3 zero-emission hatchback cost around the same as an entry-level petrol-powered Golf. The Telegraph, which broke the story on the Sunday night, said the £6,000 subsidy for pure electric vehicles could be announced as part of Boris Johnson's major speech to relaunch the economy that it says is pencilled in for Monday 6 July. The deal would operate in a similar way to the Government-backed scrappage scheme in 2009, which was launched after the financial crisis to reinvigorate car sales and consumer spending. That scheme - reducing the price of any new car by £2,000 when motorists scrapped their old one - saw around 400,000 new cars being bought in the UK while it was available. Industry insiders have been calling for an incentive to help the car industry recover from the coronavirus, with the lockdown forcing motor dealerships to close for two months and saw registrations of new cars plummet by 97 per cent in April and 89 per cent in May to the lowest levels since the end of the Second World War. The Prime Minister would also see the move as a positive break for UK manufacturing, with the popular Nissan Leaf build at the Japanese firm's factory in Sunderland and Mini's Plant Oxford producing the all-new Mini Electric. Jaguar Land Rover has also set out plans to increase its electric vehicle offering, having already brought plug-in hybrid models to the market - though the firm's only pure-electric car so far is the Jaguar I-Pace SUV, which is built in Graz, Austria. Such a move would be a huge milestone for the sector as it would bring price parity for electric cars compared to models with internal combustion engines for the first time in the UK. With a £6,000 subsidy, the price of the new Volkswagen ID.3 (pictured) would fall to around the same price as a petrol-powered entry-spec Golf hatchback For instance, the price of a Nissan Leaf would drop to around £20,000, which will be on par with the Nissan Qashqai, starting from £20,565 in the UK. The all-new £24,400 Mini Electric would fall to just £18,400 - a like-for-like fee as a petrol Mini Cooper. What the SMMT has said about a potential scrappage scheme Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said in a statement last week: 'The lockdown has had a significant impact on many automotive businesses, lives and livelihoods, with closures resulting in a total collapse of sales and production. 'Like many sectors, we have been in constant communication with Government, highlighting the situation and what support might be needed when the immediate crisis eases. 'Showrooms opened in England yesterday and reports so far suggest a positive response from consumers. 'However, while there will be some pent up demand, the effect on underlying consumer confidence will be unclear and we may need to work with government to identify ways of boosting demand, especially given the contribution this sector makes to the economy and jobs. 'That time is not now but industry, and government, need to be prepared for all eventualities.' Tesla's most affordable Model 3 would decrease from around £40,000 to £34,000, around the same a a mid-spec BMW 3 Series saloon. Volkswagen's new ID.3 is also due to hit showrooms in 2020, priced at around £27,500. A £6,000 subsidy when a motorists scraps their old car would see this price fall to the same level as the cheapest Mk8 Golf hatchback with an internal combustion engine. It is already know the government and the UK trade body, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, have been in communication regarding the relaunch of a scrappage scheme to help boost demand for new cars following the pandemic. However, a leaked letter seen by The Guardian sent from SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes to Chancellor Rishi Sunak said that any 'market stimulus package' would need to encourage the purchase of diesel and petrol cars on an equal footing with cleaner vehicles - despite the government's push for drivers to switch to electric cars. In a letter seen by the paper that was sent to the chancellor and the business secretary, Alok Sharma, the SMMT boss said a scheme would need to 'support the entire market, not just disproportionately favouring specific segments or technologies, recognising the diverse nature of UK automotive manufacturing'. The Government is more likely to favour a scheme targeted at zero-emissions models as it would be seen to fit with the commitment to ban the sale of all new petrol, diesel or hybrid cars by 2035 - as well as the significant investments in boosting electric car uptake announced earlier this year. This includes a £1billion package for green transport solutions confirmed in the Budget in March, which included £500million to support the roll-out of new rapid charging hubs and the extension of the Plug-in Car Grant. It is unclear if the PICG - already cutting the price of EVs by £3,000 - would continue to be available if the scheme was launched. If so, the retail price of a qualifying electric model would be £9,000 lower than the quoted RRP. Click here to view original web page at www.dailymail.co.uk Read the full article

DEAD: Golf R 🇩🇪 ______________________________________ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ [8/7/19] For 2020, the Golf R is DEAD as it is no longer part of the Golf lineup! The Golf is getting loads of changes as we await the all new Mk8 Golf! The US market has dropped all Golf variants except the GTi due to poor sales and for now there will be a Value model to hold off buyers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🏁 @Allcarnews Spec sheet: The current Golf R packs a Turbo 2.0L 4 cylinder making around 288HP and 280 lb-ft of torque going to all four wheels through a 6speed manual or a 7 speed DCT. 🏁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So is the Golf R gone for good? NO! We expect to see a next generation Golf R on the Mk8 platform! But the Golf for the US is up in limbo as we most likely will only get the GTi and next Golf R and not any standard versions of the iconic hatchback. The Mk8 Golf should be unveiled in October as a 2020 model but we should get it as a 2021 model. ________________________________________ ACN EXTRA: Should VW make a 300+HP Golf R as standard? ________________________________________ -Text by @allcarnews -Images by VW ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Golf #Volkswagen #GolfR #GTi #USA #Germany #4motion #VW #Quattro #TDI #carbon ||#powerful #performance #turbocharged #supercharged #advanced #SupercarsRevamped #Supercar #HyperCar #ItsWhiteNoise #CarLifeStyle #MadWhips #CupGang #Carstagram #BlackList #AmazingCars247 An #allcarnews post https://www.instagram.com/p/B03_1CwhQhT/?igshid=ygj86ifzqao4

2020 Skoda Octavia spied virtually undisguised Skoda’s biggest-selling model will be moving to an all-new generation for 2020, and the most revealing spy images yet show the car’s design with seemingly tiny amounts of disguise. While it initially appears that somebody in the Czech brand’s development team has made a huge error, the Octavia is actually cleverly camouflaged with fake panelling covering bits of the bodywork and painted in the same colour as the car. Still, we can clearly see how much the design is inspired by the Superb, with front-end view showing the 2020 Octavia ditches the controversial split headlamp design of the current car in favour of single units. These bookend a much larger grille, brought into line with the test of the range, while the clamshell bonnet is uncannily Superb-esque. Disguise panelling down the sides restricts our view of the lower body, but in profile the estate variant appears quite boxy and angular. A rear spoiler wraps around the sloping rear window, while the tailgate and tail-light design bears no resemblance to today’s Octavia. It’s not expected that the Octavia will grow in exterior dimensions, as it’ll make use of an updated version of the MQB platform used by today’s model - and the next-generation Golf. However, VW insiders tell us that the Mk8 Golf will use a greater percentage of lightweight metal, reducing kerbweight by around 50kg - that could also be the case for the Octavia. We’ve yet to see the Octavia’s interior in any form, but we can see from the new Scala

Volkswagen T-Roc R 2020 long-term review
Why we're running it:To see if VW can succeed where rivals have failed and give us a fast crossover that's as good to drive as a hot hatchWelcoming the T-Roc R to the fleet - 5 August 2020Temporarily, at least, the T-Roc Rrepresents the pinnacle ofVolkswagen'sperformance division output. From an enthusiast's perspective, that might seem a somewhat strange mantle for a jacked-up compact crossover to assume, but withthe Mk7 Golf Rmega-hatch being withdrawn from sale shortly after the T-Roc R's launch last year, that's the situation in which we find ourselves. For what it's worth, I think the launch of a more hardcore version of Volkswagen's second-smallest SUV is a pretty encouraging statement of intent. In fact, when the T-Roc R was first unveiled, Jost Capito – the man who heads up Volkswagen's R division – told Autocar that the task he'd been given was to "make R to Volkswagen what M is to BMW".That's by no means an aim lacking in ambition, but based on the news that has been emerging from Volkswagen over the past few weeks and months, it isn't an idle one, either. obd2 scanners. So there'll be anR version of the Arteon four-door coupéin a few months' time, as well as a shooting brake model. Therecently facelifted Tiguan will join the R rangein the autumn. We got a look atthe plug-in hybrid V6-engined Touareg Rearlier this year, andthe Golf R will make its returnin Mk8 guise before the year's end. Capito and his team have certainly been busy.Volkswagen arrives late at the crossover hatchback party. But can the T-Roc still turn heads in a congested segment? But for now, it's the T-Roc R. Its arrival on the Autocar long-term test fleet will provide an opportunity for us to determine whether or not it represents a worthy addition to the R family while we also examine the pros and cons of living with a performance crossover compared with, say, a more traditional hot hatch. Given the fact thatthe last long-termer my road test colleagues and I ran in earnest was a Renault Mégane RS , I'd say we're pretty well placed to find out.For anyone well versed in small, fast Volkwagens (orAudisandCupras , for that matter), the T-Roc R's mechanical specification won't come as much of a surprise. It's based on the VW Group's MQB architecture and uses the same EA888 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine that appeared in the previous Golf R. It develops the same 296bhp and 295lb ft as it did in its hatchback sibling and deploys it through a familiar combination of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and part-time Haldex clutch-based four-wheel drive system.Dimensionally, it's a bit different, of course, being both shorter in length and wheelbase than the previous Golf, but also taller, wider and (slightly) heavier than the hatchback. There's a more aggressive suspension tune that makes its ride height 20mm lower than a standard T-Roc's, as well as a new aluminium front subframe and revised engine mounts. UK cars get smart-looking 19in Pretoria alloy wheels as standard and the larger performance brakes that were once an option on the Golf R are also included free of charge. All of this combines to paint the T-Roc R as a seriously quick cross-country machine, at least on paper. With its standard-fit launch control engaged and Race mode selected, it can cover 0-62mph in just 4.8sec, Volkswagen claims, and it has a top speed of 155mph. So it's easily in the same ballpark as the likes ofthe Cupra Ateca ,Audi SQ2andBMW X2 M35iin terms of performance, although with a base price of £40,735, the T-Roc R is pricier than its VW Group compatriots, if cheaper than the BMW.And when you delve into the options list, there's scope to bump up that price even further – as demonstrated by our, shall we say, enthusiastically specced, £47,844 long-termer. Its headline option is the titanium Akrapovic sports exhaust, which adds a hefty £3050 to the bill but, as well as shaving 7kg, makes the T-Roc R sound a bit naughtier than it otherwise would.Other options include – but aren't limited to – a rearview camera (£190), Lapiz Blue metallic paint (£755), a Winter Pack with heated front seats (£305) and keyless entry (£400). The most i...
